Also spelled cornelian, carnelian is a form of chalcedony. It is a reddish brown semi-precious gem stone found in Britain, India, Uruguay, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Iceland, Slovakia, Peru, and Romania.

Its crystal structure is hexagonal. Carnelian’s red color comes from iron oxide impurities within its silica structure.


History and Folklore

Carnelian was once worn on the hand in Egypt to ward against anger, hatred, and jealousy. It was used to protect both the living and the dead.

During the Renaissance, a carnelian might be carved with the image of a sword and hung in the home to protect against lightning and other damage to the home.
